How to Make a Major Life Decision When You Don't Have Certainty
Most people wait for certainty before making a big decision. It rarely comes — not because you haven't thought about it enough, but because certainty was never the thing you were missing.
What you're actually looking for is clarity. And clarity doesn't require knowing exactly how things will turn out. It requires knowing exactly what's true right now — what you want, what you're afraid of, and which one is actually speaking.
Why certainty isn't coming
Certainty is a promise the future can't keep. No decision — however researched, however careful — removes the possibility that it could go differently than planned. Waiting for that guarantee isn't caution. It's a way of postponing a decision indefinitely while telling yourself you're still deciding.
What replaces it
Clarity is available now, in a way certainty never will be. It comes from separating the fear that's protecting you from the fear that's just familiar — from noticing which voice in your head is your intuition, and which one is an old, well-worn habit of doubting yourself.
That separation takes honesty, not more information. Most people already have enough information. What they don't have is a way to hear their own signal underneath everyone else's.
Making the decision anyway
You don't need to feel ready. You need enough clarity to move — and to trust that a decision made from clarity, even an imperfect one, is more workable than indefinite waiting disguised as caution.
The decision you're avoiding won't become clearer by waiting longer. It becomes clearer by getting honest sooner.
This is precisely the work decision-making coaching does with you — moving without waiting for certainty that isn't coming.
