How to Know If You Need Therapy or Coaching

It's one of the questions I get most, and it makes sense that it's confusing — from the outside, both spaces can look similar: you talk to someone, privately, about what's going on. But what they do with that is fundamentally different.

When therapy is what you need

If you're dealing with something that needs clinical diagnosis or treatment — depression, anxiety that's interfering with daily life, trauma that still hurts when touched, any mental health condition — therapy is the right space, and no amount of coaching replaces that. A good coach will tell you this directly, rather than trying to hold something they're not equipped to hold.

When coaching is what you need

If you're not in clinical crisis, but you're stuck — circling a decision, feeling like the life you built no longer fits, unsure which version of yourself to keep listening to — that's exactly where coaching works. It doesn't process the past in depth. It works with where you are now and where you're trying to go, with structure and direct honesty.

The question that actually matters

It isn't "is this serious enough for therapy?" or "is this light enough for coaching?" It's: do I need to process something from the past, or do I need clarity to move forward? Both questions deserve help. It's just not the same help.

If you're still not sure, say that directly, in the first conversation. Any serious professional — on either side — will point you toward the right place instead of keeping you out of convenience.

If coaching is the answer for you, the 90-Day Clarity Intensive is what that looks like in practice.
